Sister Susan Hatch Rasmussen
Susan was born in Palo Alto, California, the third child (second daughter) of Merrill and Charlie Hatch. Her father was a career Army officer and so the family lived in many exciting and differing places. Germany, England, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and Northern Virginia, among other places, were all home as Susan grew up. Exposure to multiple cultures and peoples has served to open her mind and heart to a broad array of ideas and thoughts.
Graduating from Hammond High School in Alexandria, Virginia, Susan moved on to Brigham Young University where she majored in English, but had a heavy emphasis in history as well. At the “Y” she was a leader in the Angel Flight service club, which was associated with the Air Force ROTC on campus.
Married in the Salt Lake Temple, Susan, with her husband, Wayne, have raised a great family, now numbering five children and eleven grandchildren, most of who live in and around Woodbridge. Susan has been a good sport as the family has taken up such activities as SCUBA and skiing, even trying skiing herself. She would probably really love it if the chair lifts were not so far above the ground. Her love of history has led to visits to many historic sites around the country and she serves as a guide at the Woodlawn Plantation and Frank Lloyd Wright house near Mt. Vernon. One of Susan’s greatest loves, however, is quilting. Her slightly perfectionist, yet artistic, personality has helped her create many beautiful quilts, which adorn the homes of family members as well as others.
Throughout her life, Susan has had a great love of the scriptures and a yearning to learn of them and from them Her natural curiosity and her commitment to scripture study has enlightened her as well as many others. She has a remarkable, humble approach that makes it enjoyable to hear her share her understanding of Gospel principles.
